The Minister of Culture and Tourism, Eldevina Materula, on Friday visited the house of renowned visual artist Noel Langa, one of the ‘baobab trees’ of Mozambican culture. The Noel Langa House, now a designated Cultural Centre, is located in Munhuana, Maputo city.
Minister Materula’s visit paid tribute to the master-painter and served to inspire the portfolio she directs in taking the right measures to preserve the arts and value its protagonists.
Speaking on the occasion, Noel Langa said he wanted to see Mozambique artworks valued and permanently displayed in historical and cultural sites and tourist attractions such as restaurants, hotels, conference centres, educational establishments, and so on.
To immortalise his work, during the school holidays Noel Langa welcomes children, teenagers and young people into the world of the arts, believing them to be the ones who will carry the tradition forward. “The man passes, but the work and the space remain for eternity,” he says.
Minister Materula remarked that one of the government’s priorities in this five-year mandate was to honour the work of artists.
“We value our artists, and pay attention to those who, like Noel Langa and others, have taken the name of the country abroad through their work, because we consider them true ambassadors of our culture, and of our country,” she said.
One of the government’s foci is to promote cultural venues, and the sector is currently identifying artistic and cultural locations which warrant inclusion in the national tourist itinerary.
Materula promised that Noel Langa’s house was one of the spaces that would be promoted in this itinerary for its emblematic character.
