The Mozambican government eradicated 289 ‘ghost’ officials from public institution payrolls in 2019, Mozambique’s Council of Ministers spokesman announced on Tuesday.
“An amount of around 16 million meticais [€188,000] was saved by the suspensions,” deputy minister of Justice and cabinet spokesman Filimão Suaze told reporters after the 30th ordinary session of the Council of Ministers in Maputo.
The discovery of ‘ghost’ officials and state agents resulted from consideration by the Council of Ministers of an audit based on 2019 ‘proof of life’ tests yesterday.
In addition to the suspended employees, Suaze said that a further 26 people were arrested for irregularities, and more lawsuits to hold offenders accountable were underway.
“The system makes it possible to identify all individuals in an irregular condition and, because of that, there is ongoing activity on the part of the Public Prosecutor’s Office to hold any individual involved in irregularities accountable,” Suaze stressed.
