The Mozambican Tax Authority expects, by January 2021, to have raised 60 million meticais by regularising foreign-registered vehicles, a campaign for which purpose was launched on Friday at the Ressano Garcia administrative post in Maputo province.
The initiative is called “Legal key, secure key” [“Chave legal, chave segura”].
According to the director-general of Customs, Taurai Tsama, 3,884 vehicles were regularised in the last three years, netting the state 128.93 million meticais. The last operation, carried out from October 2018 to February 2019, legalised 687 vehicles, with around 49 million meticais pouring into state coffers.
The Tax Authority of Mozambique expects to collect around 60 million meticais in this latest campaign, Tsama says, noting that 80% of the vehicles with irregular foreign registration are from South African, and 5% from Eswathini.
“The provinces of Maputo, Inhambane and Gaza have the most foreign-registered vehicles,” Tsama revealed, “and there are also a number of vehicles with false license plates.”
