The armed groups that invaded the port of Mocímboa da Praia on Wednesday are infiltrating the communities and commanding attacks against the town from the port facilities, the minister of defence of Mozambique announced on Thursday.
“The enemy has infiltrated several neighbourhoods, dressed as civilians and benefiting from complicity, attacking the village from the inside, causing destruction, looting and murdering defenceless citizens, with sabotage manoeuvres and attacks on naval means of rescue from the port of Mocímboa da Praia,” Jaime Neto said.
He added that the “alleged Islamic state” in Cabo Delgado is receiving reinforcements from outside the country.
The armed groups invaded the port of Mocímboa da Praia in the early hours of Wednesday and the confrontations left an unknown number of dead, including members of the marine force, according to information from an army source to Lusa.
In Cabo Delgado, attacks by armed groups, which erupted in 2017 even in Mocímboa da Praia, have caused at least 1,059 deaths, and some of the groups’ actions have been claimed by the ‘jihadist’ Islamic State group.
According to the United Nations, the armed violence in that northern province of Mozambique has forced 250,000 people to flee from insecure districts further north.
