Mozambique: Mondlane asks for international support at Oslo meeting - Watch

President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi yesterday held a virtual working meeting with the President of the World Bank Group, David Malpass, as part of their excellent cooperative partnership, a communique from the Presidency of the Republic reads.
The virtual meeting aimed to evaluate the development programmes supported by the World Bank Group and to envisage future actions to boost the strategic partnership in favour of the sustainable development of Mozambique, especially in the areas of road infrastructures, post-Idai and Kenneth reconstruction, agriculture, energy and the response to Covid-19.
The President of the Republic and the President of the World Bank Group during their meeting reaffirmed their commitment to promoting partnership and cooperation, especially in areas such as boosting economic growth, increasing productivity and generating jobs, developing human capital and strengthening fiscal sustainability.
The occasion saw favourable pronouncements in relation to support for agriculture, especially for small farmers and entrepreneurs in the sector, increasing productivity and income and generating jobs. Both President Nyusi and David Malpass congratulated themselves on the “Sustenta” programme now being implemented across Mozambique. The World Bank said that US$500 million was available to support this sector.
The World Bank declared itself receptive to continuing to support and finance road infrastructure projects, and to make resources available to finance energy and electricity projects, with the emphasis on the Temane and Rovuma Basin Area 4 projects.
The two leaders welcomed ENH’s stance on transparency, which translates into the publication of its accounts and its operations, encouraging the continuation of reforms in other public companies, improving the transparency environment in order to attract more and more resources to the country, including foreign direct investment.
The World Bank was open to identifying concrete interventions in support of the rehabilitation programme for National Road Nº 1 and other vital infrastructure.
The World Bank assured the President that it would continue to provide support and financing to the private sector in priority areas such as agriculture, energy and infrastructure and in improving the business environment
With regard to the security situation in Cabo Delgado, after sharing information on the impact of terrorist attacks and the Government’s response, the World Bank encouraged and was favourable to supporting the reconstruction of infrastructure and economic development activities, the creation of employment for young people, and specific projects, to be identified. He congratulated the government on the measures it had already taken to face this challenge.
As for the response to Covid-19, the two leaders congratulate themselves on measures to prevent and contain the spread of this pandemic and on the support of the World Bank through the disbursement of resources for direct budget support. The World Bank has pledged to continue to support the Mozambican Government’s efforts in this regard.
Finally, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening their partnership, urging members of the World Bank’s team to continue interacting with the Government of Mozambique to intervene in specific areas and programmes, especially through the Resident Director of the World Bank in Mozambique.
During the virtual meeting, the Mozambican Head of State was accompanied by the Minister of Economy and Finance, Adriano Maleiane, and by the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, João Machatine.
For his part, the President of the World Bank was accompanied by the Vice President of the World Bank for Southern and Eastern Africa, Hafez Ghanem; the IFC’s Vice President for the Middle East and Africa, Sérgio Pimenta; the MIGA Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, and the World Bank Country Director for Mozambique.
