In a ceremony today at the Maputo Military Hospital, the United States Embassy in Mozambique and the Department of Defense through USAFRICOM had the honor of presenting a donation of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to Mozambique’s Military Health, represented by National Director of Military Health, Dr. Águeda Duarte, and Director of the Department of Military Health, Brigadier-General Bonifácio Muchanga, in support of their efforts against COVID-19.
In addition, the United States Government’s Department of Defense HIV/AIDS Prevention Program (DHAPP) and the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief Program (PEPFAR) donated four mobile clinics to aid in the expansion of the Mozambican Armed Force’s male circumcision program, which support ongoing efforts in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The total donation, valued at US$172,461, will help address PPE shortages as well as rapidly rising numbers of new COVID-19 cases in Mozambique.
The U.S. Embassy, the Department of Defense, and PEPFAR hope this donation will not only benefit Mozambican military personnel but also their families, communities, and the people of Mozambique. The United States Government will continue working alongside the Government of the Republic of Mozambique as we fight to protect the people of Mozambique from the threats of COVID-19 and HIV/AIDS.
