More than 20 foster care centres for orphaned and vulnerable children in the Mozambican province of Nampula have been closed, after violations of basic rights were detected.
In addition to the absence of minimum conditions of accommodation and food, the inspection found cases of girls sexually abused and raped by some managers, Egídio Sousa, from the Provincial Directorate for Gender, Children and Social Action, said.
The cases of sexual abuse were referred to judicial bodies, Sousa added.
He also said that the inspection concluded that some groups of citizens had created institutions merely for the purpose of collecting donations to benefit themselves, and not to safeguard the rights and wellbeing of children.
The closed centres are in the Angoche, Moma, Larde and Murupula districts.
