Mozambique: More than 17,000 children deprived of education by Cyclone Jude
Carmelita Rita Namashulua (Dar-es-Salaam 2 December 1962) is a Mozambican politician, who served as Minister of Education and Human Development.
Namashulua attended her primary school in Tunduro, Tanzania. After Independence, she came to Mozambique and studied at FRELIMO Secondary School in Ribaué until 1981, where she finished secondary school.
Between 1982 and 1983, she attended and concluded the course of Mathematics and Physics at the Faculty of Education of Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) in Maputo. Later she attended the Pedagogical University, also in Maputo, where she obtained a degree in Psycho-Pedagogy in 1994.
Throughout her professional career, Carmelita Namashulua has always worked in Maputo city. She was a Physics teacher at Josina Machel Secondary School, between 1984 and 1996. She was also the Physics Delegate School, between 1985 and 1987, and Pedagogical Director, between 1998 and 2001. Outside her teaching career, Carmelita Namashulua was Coordinator of Support Programs for Vulnerable Women in the Office of the First Lady, from 1994 to 2001. In 1998, she was Advisor to the National Institute of Social Action for income generating activities.
Between 2001 and 2005 she was the National Coordinator of the “Terre de Hommes”, based in Germany. Carmelita Namashulua was awarded the Socialist Emulation in 1985.
She served as Minister of State Administration and Public Service, between 2015 and 2020. In the five-year period from 2010 to 2014, she was also Minister of State Administration.
She is a member of the FRELIMO Party and since September 2006 has been a member of the Central Committee and the Secretariat of the Central Committee. She professes the Christian religion in the Catholic Church. She is the mother of two children. She speaks Shimakonde, Kiswahili, Portuguese and English. Her hobbies are reading, listening to music and caring for plants.
