The mayor of Zimbabwe’s capital Harare has been arrested over allegations of land scams and abuse of office.
Local media reports that Hebert Gomba, a member of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), was arrested by officials from the anti-corruption body.
A government minister has tweeted about the arrest:
“Harare Mayor Hebert Gomba has been arrested on allegations involving land scams and abuse of office as a public officer.
He is accused of being in the illegal creation and sale of stands, with irregularities in the approval of plans and altering plans.”https://t.co/KNfmhgVaGw— Nick Mangwana (@nickmangwana) July 22, 2020
Mr Gomba is being held at Rhodesville police station.
The MDC has called his arrest “unconstitutional” and promised to challenge it.
Other council officials have recently been arrested over what the government-controlled Herald newspaper has referred to as irregularities in land matters.
