South Africa’s labour minister Thembelani Nxesi has been admitted to hospital after testing positive for Covid-19 almost a week ago, according to a government statement.
He had been in self-quarantine at home.
He was transferred to hospital on Monday night on the advice of his doctor, the statement said.
Mr Nxesi is the second cabinet minister to be hospitalised. Energy minister Gwede Mantashe was admitted to hospital on Monday after testing positive for Covid-19.
South Africa has the highest number of confirmed Covid-19 cases on the continent. About 360,000 cases have bee reported with 5,000 deaths.
