A tow truck started operating in the city of Maputo today, removing badly parked and abandoned vehicles in a bid to improve circulation in the capital.
The vehicle was handed over to the capital’s Municipal Police by Maputo mayor Eneas Comiche, with the exhortation to use it to improve parking discipline, not to carry out corrupt acts.
In addition to the tow truck, the police received 80 portable radios with microphones, chargers and antennas for five radio stations, three mobile and the other fixed. The equipment, budgeted at around eight million meticais, was purchased by the municipality.
The equipment will improve communication about badly parked vehicles in the city and help coordinate other activities.
“We should not use the tow truck to blackmail, extort or threaten the violators of municipal rules, but rather to penalise them for not observing regulations,” the capital’s mayor Eneas Comiche said.
The municipality acknowledged that the rapid growth of parking in the capital, combined with prohibited and abusive parking, street mechanics and abandoned vehicles, was causing congestion and hindering mobility, he said.
“The expectation is that the equipment will increase the police’s capacity for a timely response, as well as boosting police communications in the municipal districts, while reinforcing security and communication between the corporation and citizens,” Comiche pointed out.
Maputo Police commander Paulo Langa said the equipment would expedite the removal of vehicles that had been abandoned for more than three months, hindering road traffic and pedestrians.
