Mozambique: Rioters still in control of Chókwè
Screen grab: Miramar
The Ressano Garcia border post, Mozambique’s main crossing point with South Africa, reopened yesterday, 24 hours after closing because an official on the South African side tested positive for Covid-19.
The reopening took place at about 3:00 p.m. yesterday, to the relief of hundreds of truck drivers on both sides, especially in South Africa, transporting cargo to the Port of Maputo and the domestic market.
The reopening of the border was preceded by disinfection by Mozambican health sector teams in the early hours of yesterday morning.
Pedro Pene, head of Ressano Garcia border post, acknowledged that truck drivers were delayed for a number of hours. “During the shutdown, we processed the documents of those still arriving to speed matters after re-opening,” Pene told Noticias at around noon yesterday.
Pene said that about 350 Mozambican travellers were pre-processed during the period from 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, when the border was closed, until 3:00 p.m. yesterday.
About 4,500 travellers, including tourists and other visitors from both countries, cross the Ressano Garcia border every day.
