Mozambique: Journalist Omardine Omar detained in Maputo – Carta

Journalist Omardine Omar, from ‘Carta de Moçambique’, was detained on Thursday by a group of uniformed officers from the Police of the Republic of Mozambique, who were transported in a Mahindra patrol car. The detention took place in the Alto Maé area, Emilia Dausse Avenue, Maputo city. Omardine Omar had just met another journalist, José João, a former colleague, ‘Carta’ reported yesterday through a ‘pubic alert’ published on its Facebook page.

According t the same source, “The agents arrived and started to attack him. I wanted to know the reasons and they did not tell me,” explained José João. They also did not want to inform the journalist where were they taking him.

?Carta de Moçambqiue’ further writes that “Omar is one of the boldest reporters of the new generations” and “repudiates the macabre manner of his detention, outside of ‘flagrante delicto'”.

This morning, Mozambican NGO Centre for Democracy and Development issued a communique calling for Omar’s immediately release.
