An armed group set fire to a health post in a town in central Mozambique after stealing medicines and personal belongings from patients and staff, local authorities announced yesterday.
Head of locality António Manuel told Radio Mozambique, without specifying the group’s origin, that the attack took place in Chiedeia, Nhamatanda district, Sofala province on Wednesday.
According to Manuel, “no reports of deaths or injuries”.
The attackers entered the premises and seized medicines, along with cell phones and money from patients and employees on duty. They then set fire to the premises and fled.
The head of locality called for a “reinforcement of vigilance” by the residents.
The incident occurred in an area in the centre of the country where some districts have seen attacks, attributed to a Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) splinter group, that have already claimed more than 20 lives since August 2019.
