Liyacat Umargi, managing partner of Moreira & Silva in Beira, was kidnapped at around 7:00 p.m. last Friday, when, according to police “two unidentified individuals in two vehicles intercepted the Mozambican in the Ponta-Gêa neighbourhood, and abducted him”.
After seven days in captivity, the businessman was on Thursday evening, May 21, reunited with his family, still in good health, Magazine CRV learned early today from a source close to the family.
Magazine CRV contacted the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) public relations office, which said it would be premature to comment but promised an announcement later today.
But another reliable source has it that Liyacat’s release came only after the payment of a ransom, and indeed that, in these situations, a ransom is always paid.
UPDATE -Friday, 11:33 a.m.
A note from SERNIC just arrived at our newsroom confirms that “citizen Liyacat Umargi has been restored to liberty”.
The note and goes on to say that “as soon as we became aware of this criminal act, steps began with a view to rescuing the victim, right up until the information of him having returned to family life reached us”.
“Efforts continue to establish the real reason for his release, as well as to locate, neutralize and hold accountable the perpetrators of this criminal and antisocial act,” it concludes.
