Mozambique: President calls for swift humanitarian response for IDPs
The Interior Minister announced yesterday (Thursday 14th) that terrorists attacked at least 11 villages in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, where they kidnapped 16 citizens. But the Defence and Security Forces, in “offensive and defensive actions”, killed 50 “terrorists”.
“In their career of terror and intimidation of defenceless populations and the destruction of infrastructure in the north of Cabo de Delgado, the terrorists who act at the behest of obscure external interests, harassed by the victorious actions of the Defence and Security Forces, launched last week and at the beginning of this week attacks in the following districts: Nagande [district], on the 3rd of this month, the terrorists attacked the village of Litingina, on the 11th, the terrorists attacked simultaneously the villages of Litingina and Ngologolo; in Quissanga [district], on the 4th, terrorists attacked Cagembe village, in Mahate, and on the 9th, the terrorists attacked the villages of Tapara, in Tororo locality, in Bilibiza; in Mocímboa da Praia [district], on the 4th, the terrorists fired shots at the Namaculo village where they kidnapped five citizens, and on the 13th they attacked the Ntoto village; in Meculo [district], on the 6th, the terrorists ambushed a civilian vehicle in the Ngororo area; in Muidumbe [district], on the 11th, terrorists attacked the administrative post in Miengueleua and on the same day they attacked Awasse village; in Macomia [district], on the 12th, terrorists attacked Nkopo village; in Mueda [district], on the 13th, terrorists attacked Diaca village, ”Minister Amade Miquidade told reporters.
Speaking exclusively to state media, Mozambique’s interior minister indicated that eleven villages were destroyed in the attacks; 16 citizens were abducted and 14 are reported missing, in addition to damage to public and private infrastructure.
“In the same period, our Defence and Security Forces carried out several offensive and defensive actions, achieving the following results. On the 13th, the terrorists were surprised by our forces on the road that connects Chinda to Mbau, being transported in three vehicles and on an equal number of motorcycles and a stolen tanker truck. Forty-two terrorists were killed in the confrontation, and all means of transport destroyed. In the early hours of today, May 14, an attempted assault on the district of Quissanga was rebuffed, with the killing of eight terrorists and the wounding of others,” the minister said.
