Gelita Mhangwana, wife and custodian of the estate of Malangatana Valente Ngwenha, died last night at Maputo Private Hospital, after suffering a stroke.
A source close to the family said that the deceased was hospitalised last week after being found unwell at her home in Bairro do Aeroporto.
Malangatana was arrested by the colonial regime political police in 1964 and, during his 18-month detention by the PIDE, Gelita Mhangwana guarded and protected her husband’s works, as she did after his death.
Our source commented that there would perhaps be no Malangatana estate if it were not for his wife, who even in difficult times , never sold any of his works.
Malangatana died in Portugal on January 14, 2010.
A Ministry of Culture and Tourism press release says that the funeral is to be held on Wednesday (May 13).
“The Ministry of Culture and Tourism presents its most heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family,” the note reads.
