Eight hundred and sixty-nine individuals were detained in Mozambique in April for violating State of Emergency rules regarding the prevention of Covid-19.
The sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages in public places stands out among the violations, Radio Mozambique reports.
Orlando Mudumane, spokesman for the Police Command of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), further told Radio Mozambique’s ‘Café da Manhã’ programme that 30 citizens were detained in the first six days of May, and 27 vehicles seized after their owner violated the extended state of emergency regulations.
Mudumane admitted that there had been some instances of overzealous enforcement during the period, but said the situation was well in hand.
“The first days of the state of emergency were a learning experience for everyone, including the forces of law and order. There might have been some sporadic heavy-handedness on the part of some agents, but this was quickly addressed, and individuals who were involved in criminal acts have been held accountable – for example, the two PRM agents who beat a citizen to death in Beira. These individuals are currently detained and a criminal case is being processed by the institutions of the administration of justice,” he said.
Mudumane said that the corporation had already taken action to forestall any further occurrences of this nature, while calling on citizens to comply with state of emergency regulations to the letter.
