Mozambique on Sunday registered one further coronavirus infection, bringing to 80 the number of confirmed cases, of which 72 are locally transmitted and eight are imported.
Speaking at the daily Covid-19 update, national director of Public Health Rosa Marlene said that Mozambique had, by Sunday, May 3rd, tested 2,466 suspected cases, 129 cases in the previous 24 hours, of which 128 tested negative and one positive.
The positive case is related to the investigation in Afungi and is an individual in that location.
Of the samples tested in the previous 24 hours, 95 came from Cabo Delgado, 10 from Zambezia, 13 from Inhambane and 11 from Maputo City.
The official also indicated that the country registered another fully recovered case, bringing the full recovery total to 19.
Most cases of new infections – 60 out of the 80 – are asymptomatic, and there has not yet been any manifesting severe symptoms, the health authorities announced .
The epidemiological bulletin released yesterday noted that 75% of cases in Mozambique had no symptoms; in 22% there were mild symptoms and 3% revealed moderate symptoms of the disease.
There are also clear divisions regarding gender and age. Of the 80 cases, only eight are women and the majority of those infected (41) are between 10 and 39 years old, with another 21 patients in the 40 to 49 age group.
Of the remaining 18, eight infected people are between 50 and 59 years old and 10 are over 60.
Ilesh Jani, director-general of the National Institute of Health, said on Sunday that the gender difference was related to the fact that the majority of infections in Mozambique originated in the natural gas processing construction site in Afungi, Cabo Delgado province, where the workforce is predominantly male.
Of the 80 cases of infection with the new coronavirus, 50 have Mozambican nationality, followed by South Africa, with 11, Italy, with five, and Australia, with three. India and England each have two cases. Kenya, USA, Burundi, Philippines, France, Georgia and Turkey each registered one infected citizen in Mozambique.
Most cases of infected foreigners were also connected to the Afungi construction site, Jani said.
There were 880 workers on the site on April 1, the date on which the first case of infection was confirmed in the laboratory. Of those 880, 560 (49 positive) have already been tested and the remaining 320 people should be tested by Tuesday, he added.
