The second ordinary meeting of the National Defence and Security Council (CNDS) took place on Thursday, chaired by the President of the Republic and Commander in Chief of Mozambique’s Defence and Security Forces, Filipe Nyusi.
The CNDS considered, among several items on the agenda, information on the state of public order and security, with a focus on the province of Cabo Delgado.
The Council commended the Defence and Security Forces for their efforts to restore public order and security as well as the normal functioning of institutions, and called on communities to continue their commitment to support the FDS.
The National Defence and Security Council analysed the situation of the attacks in the province of Cabo Delgado and concluded that the fact that they have been claimed by the Islamic State, a terrorist organisation, reveals that we are in the presence of external aggression perpetrated by terrorists.
The CNDS carried out an intermediate assessment of the State of Emergency, having praised the efforts of health professionals and all the actors involved in the fight against Covid-19.
The body noted the implementation of preventive measures against the spread of the pandemic, but decried the attitude of some citizens who were abandoning mandatory quarantine, calling into question the joint efforts to combat this evil, and called on all stakeholders to raise awareness towards compliance with the recommendations of the competent entities.
The Council noted that several companies had committed to the production of Covid-19 personal protective equipment, and urged more companies to embrace the same initiative.
Finally, the National Defence and Security Council analysed the state of play of the amnesty and pardoning of sentences, as well as the granting of conditional releases, and called on society to support the beneficiaries of these indulgence for their effective reintegration into society, so that they do not return to criminal, or any other practices which may jeopardize social harmony.
