A total of 57 people died and another 191,000 were affected by the 2019-2020 rainy season in Mozambique, the Institute for Disaster Management (INGC) said on Monday.
INGC indicates that in the central region there were 41 deaths in Zambezia province, eight in Sofala, two in Manica.
In Maputo province there were four and in Niassa (North), two deaths.
The data, which analyses the country’s situation between October and March, showed that most of the deaths (45) were caused by lightning strikes, with the other deaths being linked to landslides and drowning.
INGC reported that the rainy season affected more than 191,000 people and destroyed about 18,000 homes, 550 classrooms and eight hospitals.
Between the months of October and April, Mozambique is hit by cyclonic winds from the Indian Ocean and by floods from the southern African watersheds, in addition to droughts that almost always affect some parts of the south.
The 2018/2019 rainy season was one of the most severe in memory: 714 people died, including 648 victims of two cyclones (Idai and Kenneth) that hit the country in March and April last year.
