Mozambique’s government is to distribute around 12,000 masks to people in need in the country to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus, the deputy minister of transport and communications said on Thursday.
“This is not a time to make money but to save ourselves from this disease. We will prioritise the neediest people and show society that the important thing is that the masks are safe and meet the criteria of the Ministry of Health,” Manuela Rebelo said.
Rebelo was speaking on Thursday during a mask distribution campaign in downtown Maputo, where she said the amount is part of the first phase of the project, which is expected to cover the whole country.
With a total of 29 cases confirmed since 22 March, Mozambique is in a state of emergency due to Covid-19 during the whole month of April, with schools, entertainment and leisure spaces closed, all kinds of events and agglomerations banned, besides the suspension of visa issuance.
