The Mozambican government and partners (the CTA and workers) this Thursday announced the suspension, supposedly as a result of the effect of the new coronavirus pandemic on the economy, of the 2020 minimum wages negotiations.
At a press conference today, the Minister of Labour and Social Security, Margarida Talapa, said that the fact that the majority of the companies interviewed were anticipating large losses, weighed large in the decision. In practical terms, it has been ascertained that conditions for continuing the negotiating round were absent.
“We plan on resuming negotiations as soon as the Covid-19 situation normalises,” she added.
The private sector, represented by the Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA), said that it seek to ensure the sustainability of companies.
“At the moment, the most important thing is to secure jobs and ensure regular payment of wages,” CTA chairman Agostinho Vuma pointed out.
The Mozambican Workers’ Organisation (OTM) conceded that there was indeed an “abnormal solution”, while acknowledging that the current macroeconomic scenario continued to be less than favourable.
