Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) confirmed on Tuesday the arrest on Monday, in Maputo, of a Brazilian citizen wanted there on suspicion of being a major drug trafficker.
This is Gilberto Aparecido Dos Santos , also known as “Fuminho,” and wanted by Brazilian authorities for over 21 years.
On Tuesday, SERNIC spokesman Leonardo Simbine told journalists that Fuminho’s capture arose in the context of actions to combat transnational organised crime, through cooperation between the Brazilian Federal Police, the DEA and Interpol.

After about a month in Mozambique, Gilberto Aparecido Dos Santos was seized in one of the luxury hotels in the centre of the country’s capital, in the company of two alleged Nigerian nationals.
Leonardo Simbine called Fuminho “a known drug lord, indicted for several crimes and sought by the Brazilian authorities for about 21 years. He is the subject of an international arrest warrant”.
“When these three individuals were arrested, three passports (two Nigerian and the third a false Brazilian document in the name of Luís Gomes de Jesus,) were found in his possession, along with 100 grams of cannabis-sativa, 15 mobile phones of various brands, five suitcases, a briefcase, a vehicle and respective key, 34,700 meticais, 5,040 rands and three watches.” Simbine revealed.
The accused will answer charges for crimes committed within the national territory. A criminal court judge must legalise his arrest within 48 hours, after which the Brazilian authorities must formalise any extradition request within a period not exceeding 40 days.
After that, it will be up to the Supreme Court to decide on Fuminho’s extradition.
