Following on the confirmation yesterday of five cases of Covid-19 infection among the 35 Total workers who had had contact with the 61-year-old man who travelled from Pemba to Maputo two weeks ago, those responsible for the Afungi project have taken the drastic decision to quarantine the whole site, Carta de Moçambique reports.
The order was given via a message sent by Ronan Bescond and Graham Hardy to the almost 500 workers of various nationalities on the project site. Bescond is Vice President of Total and Director General of the Mozambique LNG project.
Yesterday, Total was informed that five of the 35 samples from workers who had contact with the first patient had tested positive. Those targeted have already been informed and two of them have mild symptoms, according to the message.
This was the alarm signal which led to the decision to place “the entire project in quarantine” and reducing operations within the site to a minimum. Workers are required to stay in their rooms throughout the day, and only the most critical activities, such as safety aerodrome operations, will continue to be carried out.
Total will meanwhile test all workers in Afungi and trace, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, all local contacts outside the project site.
