Although the economy is being devastated by Covid-19, and containment measures will limit production still further, the Mozambican government assures people that there are enough basic food products on hand to support Mozambicans for 90 days.
Yesterday’s Council of Ministers session was one of the most anticipated since the declaration of a state of emergency, in which President Nyusi said that more details would presently be advanced.
But the government remained cautious, not least because parliament had still not approved the measures taken under the state of emergency. “It is only after ratification that it makes sense, in the constitutional respect of our country, for the government to comment on the measures,” Council of Ministers spokesman Filimão Swaze said.
For now, and with the economy affected by Covid-19, the Council of Ministers limited itself to commenting on the state of the country’s food reserve.
“Regarding the food reserve, we are monitoring the situation, along with producers and importers. As a result, it is assumed that there is enough stock for the next three months in terms of basic food products,” Swaze said. “There is some concern regarding the chicken issue, but this can be overcome, a survey of producers revealed.” There was also some concern as to the quantity of wheat in the country.
Filimão Swaze, who is also Deputy Minister of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs,
also commented on the situation Cabo Delgado following the insurgent attacks.
“People are already circulating in Mocímboa da Praia and Quissanga and life is returning to normal, he said, “even recognising that, because of the fear of repeated attacks, some people are moving to Pemba and Nacala. Proper monitoring is being carried out.”
Yesterday’s Council of Ministers session also approved the fixing of fees for the provision of electronic sealing and transit cargo screening services, and considered the state of implementation of the Integrated Development Agency and the Energy for All programme.
