The industry and commerce sector in Maputo has sufficient quantities of soap on the market to respond to growing demand for its use in preventing and combating the spread of the new Covid-19 coronavirus.
The guarantee was given by City of Maputo Director of Industry and Commerce of the city of Maputo, Sidónio dos Santos, speaking last Friday after a visit to a soap production unit capable of producing 8.5 tons of soap a day.
“Taking into account the measures announced in the context of actions to combat and prevent [the spread of the] coronavirus, the company halted the export of 2,000 tons of product to Malawi, Zimbabwe and Zambia, which will certainly contribute to increasing supply to the national market,” dos Santos said.
Managers at the facility said they had a stockpile of 120,000 tons of soap, enough to supply the domestic market for six months, not counting what was still being produced.
Accompanied by inspectors from the National Inspection of Economic Activities (INAE), Dos Santos also visited supermarkets in the capital to assess levels of implementation of prevention measures, as well as to check on the prices being charged.
Sidónio dos Santos said he was pleased to see compliance with coronavirus prevention measures and the availability of basic products, especially those of national origin.
“Most establishments are taking preventative measures, making products (gel-based alcohol, disinfectant or soap) available to customers for hand washing as they come on,” he said.
Dos Santos said that commercial establishments had started to replenish stocks in order to guarantee supply in the market.
