EUMAM MOZ receives visit from the United Nations Resident Coordinator

This Thursday, the Mozambican parliament elected, by consensus, deputies to the State Council, the National Defence and Security Council, and the National Human Rights Commission.
Altogether, seven individuals are chosen by the Assembly of the Republic to form the Council of State, an organ which the President of the Republic consults on affairs of state such as decreeing a state of emergency.
These are Alcinda de Abreu Mondlane, Jamisse Wilson Taimo, Aminudin Muhamed, Felizarda da Boaventura Paulino and Maria Luisa Neto Lazaro Massamba, proposed by the Frelimo bench, and Julião Vitória Picardo and Abdul Magid Ibrahimo, proposed by the Renamo bench.
These individuals will join the President of the Republic, the President of the Assembly of the Republic [Speaker], the Prime Minister, President of the Constitutional Council, former heads of state, the two former presidents of the Assembly of the Republic [Speakers], the second most popular candidate in the general elections [Ossufo Momade] and four other members recently appointed by the President of the Republic, namely Alberto Joaquim Chipande, Graça Simbine Machel, Eduardo da Silva Nihia and Daviz Mbepo Simango.
The Council of State has therefore been composed, with the respective councillors ready to take office, and already been summoned by the President of the Republic to hold its first meeting today.

The Council of State may be called upon to advise the president as to the possible declaration of a state of emergency to contain the spread of the new coronavirus.
Defence and Security
Deputies also elected new members to the National Defence and Security Council, an advisory body to the President of the Republic, in his capacity as commander in chief of defence and security, on matters related to national sovereignty, territorial integrity, the defence of democratically instituted power and the security of the Mozambican nation.
The parliament elected Frelimo deputies Jacinto Soares Veloso, Marina Pachinuapa, António Hama Tai and Brazão Aguiar Mazula, and Renamo deputy Domingos Manuel Joaquim. These join Jaime Basílio Monteiro, appointed secretary-general of the National Defence and Security Council by President Filipe Nyusi.
Human Rights Commission
The Assembly also elected Cidália Chaúque Oliveira, Alfredo Caetano Dias and Augusto Mateus to the National Commission on Human Rights, a body composed of individuals of recognised moral integrity and impartiality with experience in promoting and defending human rights.
