President Filipe Nyusi today granted pardons to 25 people suffering poor health in the country’s prisons, the Presidency has announced in a statement.
A presidential decree determines “the pardon of 25 seriously ill or terminally ill citizens who are serving prison sentences in national penitentiary establishments”.
Data from the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) indicated that, in 2018, Mozambican prisons were accommodating twice as many inmates as they were built for, without no apparent attempt to address the situation.
The PGR Annual Information indicated that the country’s prisons held 18,185 prisoners in December 2017, roughly the same number in the same period in 2016 (18,183).
