A negotiating mission for the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Extended Credit Facility (ECF) has postponed a visit to Mozambique without a further date, the institution’s representative in Maputo told Lusa on Monday.
“The ECF negotiating mission was postponed on behalf of Covid-19. There is still no forecast of when it will come to the country,” said Ari Aisen.
“In the meantime, we will continue to work with the government and advance discussions through our office in Maputo and remotely with Washington,” he added.
At the end of February, the Mozambican government said that it had submitted a request to send a technical team to the country to resume state budget support.
“We must all work to mobilise resources. It is a budget that has to respond to a context in which revenue also needs to be improved,” said Adriano Maleiane, the minister of economy and finance.
According to him, the request means that the negotiations underway between the Mozambican government and the IMF are on the right track, just as those responsible for the fund had already made clear on a previous visit to Maputo.
The scenarios outlined did not yet consider the impact of Covid-19 on the world economy.
