The European Union (EU) on Thursday announced the signing of a partnership agreement with the United Nations to provide €2 million in support of the implementation of the peace and reconciliation agreement in Mozambique from now until 2022.
“This funding is part of a broad effort by Mozambican partners to contribute to a future of peace and reconciliation, with no return to hostilities between the government and Renamo [Mozambican National Resistance]” announced the EU delegation in Maputo announced in a statement.
The agreement, signed between the EU and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) follows the €60 million announced by the then-EU High Representative Federica Mogherini in August 2019, during the signing of the Peace and National Reconciliation Agreement by President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi and the Renamo leader, Ossufo Momade.
The project will “directly support the disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration (DDR) process, ensuring that former combatants receive the necessary assistance in the transition to their reintegration into the community,” the communique adds.
“For the European Union, the signing of this agreement with UNOPS represents another step in the efforts towards an environment of stability, reconciliation and peace, with important economic, political and social benefits for Mozambique and also the neighbouring countries and the region as a whole.”
The Secretariat for the Support of the Peace Process, an autonomous entity established to support the process, will manage the project in coordination with UNOPS, with an implementation period of 18 months, the statement adds.
