Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi yesterday called for the involvement of civil society and the international community to help put an end to the armed attacks being carried out by unidentified groups in Cabo Delgado province in northern Mozambique.
“Social stability has not been restored and, to achieve this goal, we need the support of all stakeholders and the international community,” the Mozambican head of state said during a graduation ceremony at the Academy of Police Sciences on the outskirts of Maputo, the Mozambican capital.
The head of state reiterated the readiness of the country’s defence and security forces, reaffirming that the authorities were instructed to fight in defence of the people of Cabo Delgado.
“We reiterate that the government of Mozambique and the Defence and Security Forces will not rest until order and security are restored,” the president added.
Armed attacks in the province of Cabo Delgado, where natural gas megaprojects are rolling out, broke out in October 2017 and have already claimed at least 350 deaths and affected 156,400 people.
There has been no claim of responsibility for the attacks with the exception of some few communiqués from the jihadist Islamic State group, whose presence on the ground experts and authorities consider scarcely credible.
