On Wednesday, two days after four people burned to death in a vehicle on the Maputo Ring Road in Marracuene, the police and National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) remain without any notion either as to the alleged perpetrators of the crime or the identity of the victims.
Information remains scarce, but eyewitnesses in Muntanhana in Marracuene district last Monday night reportedly saw five vehicles including the burnt-out Nissan.
It is also said that the burned vehicle was playing music at high volume. Voices were heard, and suddenly there was intense fire and smoke, witnesses told ‘O País’ on condition of anonymity.
An amateur video given to the newspaper shows four burnt bodies insider the car.
“We thought it was a short circuit that set the car on fire, but when we approached we saw that four charred persons were there. The persons were tied up. The PRM arrived to secure the site, then SERNIC arrived, did the investigations and removed the bodies,” one of the ‘O Pais’ witnesses related.
Contacted by ‘O País’, National Criminal Investigation Service spokesman Leonardo Simbine said there was no news so far.
The provincial PRM (police) command in Maputo suspects that there may have been a settling of scores between rival gangs. PRM spokesperson Juarce Martins confirmed that there were four bodies inside the car, and that they were tied up and had died in a fire.
Martins also said that, as of yesterday, police authorities had not yet been contacted by anyone claiming the bodies.
There is no lighting and little night-time traffic on the Maputo Ring Road where the incident occurred. The burnt-out wreck was still on the side of the road at 12:00 noon yesterday (Wednesday).
