Climate change poses a real and dramatic danger to the city of Maputo, Miramar reports today. Erosion is breaching the protective barrier on the Costa do Sol beach and now threatens to destroy the car park.
The video below shows the state the protective wall on the seafront at Costa do Sol beach.
Construction and rehabilitation of coastal protection for the city of Maputo, with the objective of halting the erosion already underway at the time and threatening Avenida Marginal, started in October 2012 and was completed in 2014.
Eight years later, the nightmare is back. After tearing down the sea wall, the fury of the sea has already begun to damage the asphalt of the car park, which is now closed to the public as a precaution.
Well aware of the danger, which is plain for all to see, residents have been drawing attention to the situation and calling for urgent action on the part of the municipality.
Maputo City Council has acknowledged the problem and promised to comment on the matter on Thursday.
