44 years on, the Mozambican state registers property rights over ’33 Andares’

More than four decades after the nationalisation of all income-generating buildings in Mozambique, the Mozambican state has decided to register in its favour property rights over the building known as the ’33 Andares’.

Through an order published on January 2 and signed by the Ministers of Economy and Finance as well as Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, the government of Filipe Nyusi registered in favour of the state “property rights over the building called Prédio 33 Andares, located at Rua da Imprensa, nº 264, 288 312”.

“The present order constitutes a valid document for the purpose of registering property rights over the building with the Conservatória do Registo Predial de Maputo,” the order published in Boletim da República reads.

The reasons for this “regularisation” were not disclosed. After all, within the scope of the 1976 nationalisation, all buildings reverted to the state.

The ’33 Andares’ building, which lost the title of Mozambique’s tallest quite some time ago, is home to many tenants, but also houses the offices of hundreds of public and private institutions.
