Mozambique: Maputo hospital halts non-urgent operations due to blood shortage

Maputo Central Hospital (HCM), the largest in Mozambique, has suspended non-urgent surgeries due to a lack of blood, says a note from the establishment, which asks for more donations to normalise the situation.
The note, to which Lusa had access today, adds that the measure does not affect surgeries that cannot be postponed, which should advance with the amount of blood available.
The cancellation of non-urgent surgical interventions is due to the reduction in blood donations that occurs during the end and beginning of each year, due to school holidays and in many companies.
Students and workers make up the largest blood donor audience in Mozambique.
The statement does not specify the number of surgeries that will be affected by the decision.
HCM source explained to Lusa that the suspension of non-urgent surgeries is a procedure that the establishment observes annually, during the period of lower blood donation.
On average, the HCM collects 3,000 units of blood per month, but during school holidays this amount drops to about 2,000 units per month.
