Speaking to the press in Maputo on Friday after meeting the president of Mozambique’s Assembly of the Republic, Russia’s Ambassador to Mozambique Alexander Surikov said that the fight against insurgents in Cabo Delgado required a flexible joint response.
The province of Cabo Delgado has since 2017 been the scene of armed attacks by insurgents who kill, burn houses and destroy property, and the Russian ambassador considers that it is essential to prevent more casualties.
Asked about the presence of Russian troops identified as mercenaries fighting alongside Mozambique’s Defence and Security Forces in the north of the country, the diplomat declined to elaborate, but did say that Russia was available to support Mozambique in any way necessary.
President of the Assembly of the Republic, Esperança Bias, met the Russian diplomat on Friday in the scope of maintaining cooperation between the parliaments of both countries.
