Poacher arrests more than double in Maputo Special Reserve – Mozambique

Authorities in the Maputo Special Reserve detained 41 poachers in 2019, more than double the 24 of the previous year, conservation area management has announced.
“We have been more efficient, with more human resources and better equipment,” Radio Mozambique quotes Miguel Gonçalves, administrator of Maputo Special Reserve, as saying today.
The arrests were made for the poaching of mainly smaller animals, such as impala, goats and wild boar. The reserve also removed 1,200 traps last year, against 328 in 2018.
Occupying 1,040 square kilometres and located 68 kilometres from the capital, Maputo Special Reserve was established in 1960.
The Mozambican government and partners have been implementing several projects to preserve the ecosystem in this area, considered a wildlife sanctuary along the coast and the southernmost part of the border between Mozambique and South Africa.
