Mozambique: Corumana water for Greater Maputo delayed to April

The supply of water to the metropolitan region of Maputo from the Corumana Dam will only begin in April, after repairs to damaged water mains on the Incomati bridge are completed.
The system was compromised by the destruction of part of the pipeline that links the Corumana dam to the Machava Distribution Centre during the testing phase in late 2019.
According to the director-general of the Water Supply Investment and Heritage Fund (FIPAG), Victor Tauacale, the contractor is already preparing to replace the destroyed components.
“We were sorry this happened when we were already running tests. We had a collapse on the bridge over the Incomáti River. The contractor was contacted and the components to be installed are being manufactured,” Tauacale explains.
He said that everything was being done to finish the repairs by the end of March, and the system would be operational at the beginning of April.
In a first phase, 60,000 cubic metres of water per day will arrive from Corumana, with enough to supply a further 650,000 connections by 2025, and 989,000 by 2035.
The overall project includes the construction of water distribution centres in Matlemele and Matola-Gare in Matola, and Guava in Marracuene, together with distribution networks originating at these points.
Greater Maputo has been experiencing restrictions in its water supply since the weekend, following the collapse of a section of a metal bridge carrying the pipes over the Umbelúzi River in Campoane district.
The supply from Corumana is seen as a response to low levels in the Pequenos Libombos reservoir, or to damage to water mains, as in the present case.
