The Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) may, in the near future, create a joint force to support Mozambique in enhancing maritime security and fighting insurgents in the northern part of the country.
Director of the CPLP Strategic Analysis Centre Evandro Camelo floated the idea in Maputo on Thursday at the opening of the 19th International Political-Strategic Seminar.
Camelo said in an interview with Radio Mozambique that the country needed to take the lead in protecting the Mozambique Channel against invasion, especially in the light of oil and gas finds.
The Ambassador of Angola in Mozambique, José Manuel, meanwhile said there was a need to formalise technical-military cooperation between CPLP countries through defence protocols, the better to guarantee security in their respective territories.
