Cotton: Plexus workers on strike, Montepuez-based company needs US$10 million to overcome crisis

The company Plexus, the only cotton concessionaire operating in Cabo Delgado, is currently paralysed by a strike by more than 100 of its permanent workers, who are demanding payment of wages four months in arrears.
According to ‘Notícias’, the wage problem has been ongoing since October last year.
In addition to its workforce, Plexus also owes money to a significant part of the approximately 48,000 growers whose production it has taken on credit.
According to the general director of the Plexus group, Nicolas Penn, the company’s total debts amount to an estimated US$1.5 million.
Prompted by concern over the strike, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Celso Correia, travelled to Montepuez on Thursday to listen to the parties to the conflict, and concluded that bad management was to blame for the current situation.
Minister Correia promised workers and producers that he would meet the company and its bankers and find a solution to the problem within two weeks.
Plexus, which operates in Cabo Delgado and Nampula provides, needs approximately US$10 million to see it through its current financial crisis.
