Mozambique’s president, Filipe Nyusi, on Tuesday advocated a review of procedural costs, at the opening of the judicial year, so that justice is accessible to all, regardless of financial condition.
“The review [of costs] should ensure that no one is prevented from seeking justice for economic reasons,” Filipe Nyusi said in Maputo.
The Mozambican Bar Association said that Mozambican court fees are among the most expensive, and unpredictable, which is one of the biggest obstacles to access to justice.
The president said that the review of court fees requires reflection, to give Mozambicans access to the courts on equal terms.
“The system of fees in the current model is not easy to understand even for legal operators themselves,” he said.
For Nyusi, the reform of law and justice is necessary to guarantee the rights and duties of citizens and the promotion of citizenship, cohesion and social peace.
Nyusi said that the judiciary has a relevant role in combating corruption, from prevention to the accountability of criminal agents.
“To play its role properly, the judiciary itself must be dignified, respectable and credible,” he said.
Community justice must be complementary, especially in the area of alternative means of dispute resolution, he added.
