Maleiane reiterates commitment to diversifying Mozambique economy

The Minister of Economy and Finance, Adriano Maleiane, has reiterated that the government’s focus for this year is to resume productive economic activities and diversify the economy.

Speaking a few days ago in Maputo during his ministry’s Consultative Council, Adriano Maleiane said the executive wanted industrialisation to happen via agro-processing.

Maleiane spoke of the challenges that his ministry faces in broadening the tax base, collecting more revenue, implementing the report on good governance and transparency, and combating corruption in the public sector.

“We need to revisit the ministry’s competences, as coordinator, because in the past five years we have been focused on budget support and not on the diversification of the economy,” he said.

This statement of the Minister of Economy and Finance’s position comes after the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, recently announced that the government intends its five-year mandate to excel in producing a diversified, competitive and sustainable agricultural sector which contributes to food security and to the reduction of chronic malnutrition rates.

According to the head of state, modernised agriculture will increase job opportunities and raise the income of agrarian producers. The country’s aim is also to improve resilience in the face of climate change.

“Finally, we want to take decisive steps towards what we call ‘zero hunger’. It is in this context that we will take into account applied research, agricultural extension, and financing for production, marketing and agro-industry,” the president said.

Speaking at his swearing-in as President of the Republic of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi also stressed that his government seeks an economy that has industry development as one of its pillars, in line with the regional and continental integration plans.

“In this regard, we will continue to encourage business initiatives aimed at revitalising and modernising agro-industries, agro-chemical, textile and clothing industries, metal-mechanics and building materials industries. In this way, we will generate more jobs, and reduce development asymmetries and trade balance imbalances,” President Nyusi added.
