Undeclared debts: Trial in Mozambique to be held later this year – Notícias

Mozambique’s judicial authorities say that the main court case in connection with the so-called ‘hidden debts’ will take place later this year, as one of the steps to ascertain the material truth, hold the perpetrators responsible, and recover the money.

A decision by the Superior Court of Appeal, to which the 20 defendants have appealed against the definitive indictment by the 6th Section of the City of Maputo Judicial Court, is currently being awaited.

The Superior Court of Appeal will rule on whether the decision of the lower court is to be upheld or the appeal granted. If the definitive indictment is upheld, the case goes to trial. If the appeal is accepted, the previous decision may be altered.

In the case, which runs under registration 130/11/2019 / PGR, the 20 co-defendants are accused of association to commit crimes, blackmail, passive corruption, embezzlement, abuse of office or function, violation of management rules, forgery of documents, use of false documents, possession of prohibited weapons and money laundering, with the modifications resulting from the evidence collected.

Nineteen of the twenty defendants are awaiting the court case in prison. These are Teófilo Nhangumele, Bruno Tandane, Cipriano Mutota, Armando Ndambi Guebuza, Gregório Leão, António Carlos do Rosário, ngela Buque Leão, Maria Inês Moiane Dove, Fabião Mabunda, Sérgio Namburete, Manuel Renato Matusse, Sidónio Sitoe, Crimildo Manjate, Mbanda Buque Henning, Khessaujee Pulchand, Simione Mahumane, Naimo Quimbine, Márcia Caifaz Namburete and Zulficar Ahmad. Elias Moiane is the only defendant who has been granted bail.

The undeclared debts, with state guarantees, were incurred by the companies Proindicus, EMATUM and MAM.
