The Mozambican Ministry of Education and Human Development (MINEDH) has announced that it will distribute 18.1 million 2020 school year textbooks to students ranging from the first to the seventh grades by 25 January.
The director of the National Institute of Human Development (INDE), Ismael Nheze, told daily newspaper Notícias that the plan also foresees the delivery of 162,000 primary education manuals and 163,000 teacher guide books.
Students in the third, fifth, sixth and seventh grades are expected to return their textbooks at the end of the school year, while those in the first, second and fourth grades are exempt from this obligation, Nheze said.
Students should receive the textbooks in the first week of term.
“We have put in a team to streamline the textbook’s customs clearance process, so we believe that we will be able to deliver them on schedule,” he added.
The Mozambican government distributes millions of textbooks to primary school students annually, aiming to mitigate the financial incapacity of the majority of parents, encourage education and reduce the school dropout rate.
