At least 14 people were killed in two attacks in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), local sources quoted by international news agencies on Wednesday say.
Five police and one civilian died on Tuesday night during an attack on a police station in the north-eastern province of Ituri.
“Gunmen attacked the post in central Irumu, firing bullets in all directions,” Guly Gotabo, a civil society official in Irumu, part of Ituri, told France-Presse.
“The attackers killed five police officers and one civilian, looted the police station and stole two guns,” according to a local administrative official quoted by the same news agency.
The attack was confirmed by the army spokesman in the region.
In neighboring North Kivu, in the south of Ituri province, eight people “were killed with knives,” a local official told the French news agency.
According to one resident, Eugène Rwanze, the attackers first killed a state official, along with his wife and five children, before executing a neighbour.
“In this area there are FDLR [Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, a Hutu rebel group] personnel spreading terror. Investigations will identify the perpetrators of these atrocities,” Rwanze said.
The FDLR rebel group, one of the targets of the Congolese army, in September announced the death of its leader. Eastern DRC has long been the scene of attacks and violent conflict.
