The president of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the main opposition party, said on Monday that the validation of the election results by the Constitutional Council (CC) jeopardises social stability, peace and reconciliation in Mozambique.
“The CC validated and proclaimed the election results, violating all legal preconditions and calling into question social stability, peace and reconciliation,” Ossufo Momade said during a press conference in Maputo.
At stake is the proclamation of the results of the 15 October elections by the CC, confirming the re-election of Filipe Nyusi, in the first round, for a second term, with 73% of the votes, and the absolute majority of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) in the three elections in all constituencies – 11 in the country, plus two abroad (Africa and the Rest of the World).
The president of Renamo considered the process a farce, reiterating that the party will hold nationwide demonstrations to repudiate the results of the Friday general elections and restore electoral truth, although he did not give dates or details.
“Renamo does not accept this electoral farce which represents a hard blow to the basic principles of democracy,” Ossufo Momade said, who denounced alleged persecution of party members in different parts of the country, in addition to alleged assassinations.

“We believe that the ruling that validates and proclaims the results of the 15 October elections is null and void,” Ossufo Momade reiterated.
In the presidential elections, Ossufo Momade took second place with 1,351,284 votes (21.88%), compared to 270,615 (4.38%) of the votes obtained by Daviz Simango, leader of the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), who came third.
In parliament, Frelimo, a party in power since independence (1975), strengthens the majority and will have more than two-thirds of the seats, with 184 of the 250 seats, or 73.6% of the seats, leaving 60 (24%) for Renamo and six seats (2.4%) for the Movimento Democrático de Moçambique (MDM).

Frelimo got 40 more seats than five years ago, Renamo lost 29 and the MDM lost 11.
Several observation missions from international organisations have raised doubts and concerns about the vote. The Mozambican National Election Commission expressed concern over some irregularities, justifying why it avoided describing the general elections as free, fair and transparent in announcing the results.
