Mozambique: Christmas Day attacks in Cabo Delgado – AIM report

Terrorists, believed to be inspired by Islamic fundamentalism, on Wednesday attacked the village of Chitunda, in Muidumbe district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, reports Friday’s issue of the independent newssheet “Carta de Mocambique”.

Chitunda is a village where, earlier in the month, angry residents allegedly threw out a unit of the defence and security forces for not protecting them against the terrorists.

But on Christmas Day the insurgents came back, burnt a truck belonging to a construction company and also set on fire several houses inside the village, which lies on the boundary between Muidumbe and Mocimboa da Praia districts.

Circulation of traffic along the road from Chitunda to Awasse was paralysed for about four house, until a unit of the defence forces arrived from the provincial capital, Pemba, and escorted vehicles to the Awasse crossroads.

According to the newsheet’s sources, also on Wednesday insurgents attacked the Paquisilua production centre in Mocimboa da Praia, but no fatalities were reported in this raid.

Late in the day the insurgents went to a village in the Marare region, but first kidnapped a group of women who were fetching water from a local well. They ill-treated the women, and forced them to reveal where their menfolk were.

But when they arrived at the village, their approach was seen, and the villagers fled. The insurgents than abandoned the women they had taken.

In the same area, two trucks were attacked by insurgents on Sunday. The following day a pick-up truck and a minibus came under attack.
