Financial support from the World Bank following this year’s cyclones in Mozambique has enabled the restoration or building of 700 kilometres of paved roads in the affected areas, the organisation announced on Tuesday.
“The projects financed by the World Bank have restored or built 700 kilometres of paved roads, 1,900 kilometres of rural roads, 46 bridges and 40 kilometres of dikes to protect roads from flooding,” said Rakesh Tripathi, the World Bank’s senior transport expert and project leader.
The World Bank’s immediate support after the cyclones was US$500 million (€449 million), plus US$110 million (€99 million) for a rural road program.
“After just over six months, Mozambique has restored most of its bridges and roads damaged” by cyclones, the financial institution said.
The areas affected by Cyclone Idai are located in the centre of the country and are part of Manica and Sofala provinces, while Cyclone Kenneth reached Cabo Delgado in the north.
