Frelimo, whose Political Commission met for its 39th session in Maputo on Wednesday, has expressed concern about the attacks in the centre and north of the country, advocating the intensification of measures to contain the incursions of armed groups there.
“The Political Commission reiterates its deep concern about the attacks carried out by criminals in some parts of Cabo Delgado province and in the Central region, causing the loss of precious human lives and the destruction of people’s assets,” a statement by the Liberation Front of Mozambique (Frelimo) reads.
The ruling party statement condemns the attacks, and considers it necessary for Defence and Security Forces operations to be intensified to contain the incursions of armed groups in both regions, drawing attention to the social and economic impact of the attacks.
“The Political Commission strongly condemns these attacks and encourages the Government to step up the necessary measures to quickly restore the tranquillity of affected communities and investor confidence,” the document reads.
In the Cabo Delgado region, in the north of the country, armed attacks have reportedly been taking place since October 2017, after years of friction between Muslims of different origins, with violence erupting in radicalised mosques.
At least 300 people have died in Cabo Delgado, according to official and unofficial figures, and 60,000 residents have been affected, many forced flee elsewhere for safety, according to the United Nations.
In Manica and Sofala provinces, in the centre of the country, the security situation is affecting two of the country’s main road corridors: the EN1, which connects the north and south of the country, and the EN6, which connects the city and port of Beira to Zimbabwe and other countries in the interior of southern Africa.
The Police of the Republic of Mozambique has blamed a group of dissident Renamo guerrillas – the self-proclaimed “Military Junta” – for the attacks.
